Cloverfield

So winter finally arrived in New York this week. An arctic airmass blew through the city Sunday afternoon, and then it dropped down to like 14 degrees the next day and snowed all day yesterday. Everything was covered and it was like walking around a giant white cherry frozen coke. But now the city just looks like a day old slushee. I took our visitor from SL to do some sightseeing yesterday, but our trip got usurped by the snow so we had to cut it short. I did get some good bklyn bridge shots with my snow filter though. And I finally went to go see Cloverfield yesterday, and totally got vertigo from the shaky-cam because I was sitting too close to the screen, but it was still a good monstah movie. I think thats all. Balentine's day noise show at the Cake Shop tomorrow. These Are Powers, The Apes, Knyfe Hytes, and Mixel Pixel. Cheers.

Electro Pagan

I went to go see the Liars & No Age last night at Warsaw in Bklyn. It was at the Polish National House, which was a really nice venue. The main room looked like the general assembly auditorium at Altamont, and they were serving Pierogies and Kilbasa in one of the rooms. And Okocim and Żywiec were the beers of choice. I walked through McCarren Park to get there, and arrived kind of early so I had time to check out the venue and sample a few polish brewskies.

I had been wanting to see the Liars since 2003, when i first got into them, and now i have 5 of their LPs, 3 EPs, and a split w/ Oneida. So they share top billing w/ Les Savy Fav in my music collection. And the performance delivered on my expectations for their live show. Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill, and Julian Gross seem to have gotten even more solid since their heady dancepunk days. And the tribal, electro-pagan vibe from their German witchcraft album is still going strong. No Age was a good choice as opener, and the room was completely packed for both bands. Di Fara's

Its been a good week so far. I had some unexpected visitors from bham this weekend, and I showed them around the Village and Williamsburg. We went to a noise show at Death by Audio on Friday, grabbed a slice from the pizza auctioneers on Bedford, and then to a most good danceparty at Hugs w/ Treasure Fingers and FoTP. They crashed here that night and we met up with their Russian friend the next morning and walked around Chinatown and went to the flower market they had set up for Chinese new year. And we were supposed to go to Brighton Beach, which is where they were going to stay, but it didnt work out logistically. So I took them to Soundfix and Beacon's Closet and then we all went to this restaurant/salsa club in Noho called Gonzalez & Gonzalez. And those of us who knew better opted out of the $30 cover new jersey manwhore eurotrash dance night at Webster Hall. So that was basically it.

I have a jorb interview tomorrow morning for a NYU clinical research position at Bellevue hospital. Which hopefully i have already and will be starting soon. Last night I went out to Fort Greene to grab a few drinks with Lexie. I might look into renting an apartment over there, is a nice neighborhood and close to BAM and all the surbways.

And today me and Wriz took a field trip down to Midwood, Bklyn for to get a couple of slices of the best pizza in the city at this place called Di Fara's, where Dominic Di Fara makes regular and square slices and pies by hand. I had a plain slice to start, and then a thick corner square slice of mozz-romano-basil-mushroomy goodness. Then we took the Q train down to Brighton beash and walked down the boardwalk down to Coney Island and to the pier, and then back to Chinatown to buy a I<3NY onesie on Canal street. And then back here for Mezcal cocktails and television. And then to a most escellent authentic Mezican restaurant called Cafe el Portal in Nolita.

Bear Hands

Whose there for you when youre cold and alone? The Teenagers. The Teenagers. I went to go see them last night at their first of 3 gigs in NYC, which was a sold-out show at the Merc Lounge. And the crowd turned into the fucking paparazzo as soon as they went on stage. Bear Hands opened for them, who were really good. I just got their EP, and I'm going to see them again when the open up for Ra Ra Riot in March. So the Teens were super-chintzy French gimmick rock, but they were fun.

I'm surprised that any of these shots came out because I was standing behind a goddamn sasquatch at the show, but they turned out nicely. I should have videoed Homecoming, maybe I will if i go see them this weekend at the Cake Shop. And I finally get to see Team Robespierre at their record release showparty at DBA in Brooklyn on Friday. Hwizzle.
