Pillow Fight For Tibet

I went to Union Square this afternoon after hearing about a giant pillow fight that was starting at 3 pm. I met up with Blini at Bite and we walked to 14th, and we could see the feathers flying from 11th street. I took most of the these in and around the square. And then all of a sudden a stream of people holding Tibetan flags showed up and started marching and chanting around the square. So theres a few pictures of that as well. Only in New York would these 2 two things happen simultaneously in the same 5 block radius. Market Hotel show tonight. Cheers.

Espanda Bear

El Guincho was playing a free show for Other Music at the at Union Pool in Brooklyn yesterday. I went with Jenny and Trey and we got there a little late b/c we were drinking and watching a soccer game over here. And we went to meet B at her place and then went to Hanna Food to get some veggie deliciousness for Jenny. Union Pool was a nice venue with a outdoor patio/firepit between the bar and the main room. I'll probably going to more shows there soon. El Guincho started his Spanish Panda Bear danceparty soon after we got there and the place was packed from the very beginning, but we made our way into the crowd and i got a few decent shots.

St. Paddy's

I went to the St. Paddy's Day Parade on Fif Avenue this afternoon. Me and Belinda took the 6 up to 59th and found a good spot by the park around 62nd street. After that we went to FAO Schwarz and H&M before meeting Jenny & Trey for pints of Guinness and brownies in Union Square. And then we walked from there down through Gramercy Park to the West Village.

I got my ticket to Health / Crystal Castles at Studio B next Tuesday, which should be fun. And El Guincho is playing a free Other Music party at Union Pool in Brooklyn tomorrow. And the city is making up for lost time in general from this Saturday through April 2nd. Health, Crystal Castles, Caribou, Fuck Buttons, These Are Powers, Oneida, Japanther, Pterodactyl, Holy Fuck, and A Place To Bury Strangers all have shows coming up in the next 2 weeks.

Big O / Ponytail

Friday 29

I went to go see Oneida at the Knitting Factory last night. They were playing with Mike Bones, Company, and Oakley Hall. I got there a little late so I caught the last couple of songs from Oakley Hall's set. I figured they would play before the Big O, since those bands are connected, but it was Company's CD release show. Oakley Hall was a lot better (read: less country) live than they are on their albums. And one of the girls looks exactly like Sarah Heath from Bottletree. Company wasnt for me, so I had some drinks and talked to Hanoi Jane of Oneida. Him an Bobby Matador were hanging out in the main room selling merch and 80s beisball cards. They have a new EP coming out this fall and a triple-disc monster called Rated O next year. Here's a few pictures and a video for Up With People. It's luong so start it in the middle if youre impatient.

Saturday 1

I just got back from my first show at the new hipster commune/performance space in the mighty booshwick, aka The Market Hotel. Its an enormous loft space with a big triangular room, and 3 main areas for bands to setup and rotate gear so the turnaround time is minimal, and 3 other rooms for coat checks and things. Double Dagger played first in the smaller, square 'room'. They had a nice Fugazi vibe. A French noise band called Cheveu played next, with a singer that no one in the crowd could understand. Ponytail was next, which was the highlight of the night. The little pixie of a singer was amazing and the crowd was going nuts for them. Shooting Spires was next, who i missed b/c i was out acquiring food and 40s. Big A Little A was next, which was quality electro-tribalism as per usual. And Genghis Tron closed out the night, but i didn't stay for the whole thing. The next show I'm going to see there is probably Japanther and Pterodactyl at the end of March.
